About Sean: Life Before Diabetes
Born in Mission Viejo, California in 1984, Sean Raymond Busby joined his brother Jamie, sister Jennifer, and parents Tom and Mary Lou Busby in their remote home in the prestigious Coto De Caza community. Soon after Sean's birth, the family moved to Mission Viejo, where they continued to raise a loving family. Sean was introduced to skiing at the age of 3 where his family and their friends would rent a condominium near June Lake, California. There they would ski at June and Mammoth Mountains. As he grew older he enjoyed playing year round soccer and joined the track team at his high school. Sean learned to enjoy snowboarding in his early teenage years after being introduced to it by one of his close soccer friends, Alex Boys. He instantly fell in love with the sport and was passionate in learning more about it. Sean began to spend his weekends and weekdays after school at the local Mt. High-about a two hour drive away. Being a freshman in High school was a difficult time for Sean.

He spent his days in class daydreaming of snowboarding and writing stories about the feelings he experienced while riding. These distractions made his academic career seem unimportant. The only thing on his mind was figuring out when and how he would make it up to the mountains next. In the summer of 2000, Sean's older brother Jamie, passed away from a Brown Recluse spider bite. This was a very emotional time for his family and him; however he was able to find comfort in snowboarding. He has dedicated all of his snowboarding talents to his brother in memory of his passing. The following winter Sean began to focus more and more on snowboarding as a career. He joined the snowboard team at Mountain High Resort where he would be trained by top freestyle coaches, Todd Melinn and John Zuber, in order to improve his riding skills. Sean enjoyed the freestyle scene and loved riding the half pipe. But that would not compare to the rush he got from going fast. He had always been interested in racing but didn't have the money to afford an alpine setup. Before one of his first competitions, his board was stolen while he was at the registration desk. Thankfully, he was able to continue to snowboard as his coaches would loan him their extra boards. Once he had saved up enough money, Sean decided to go ahead and buy an alpine setup. He loved the new thrill it gave him and, jokingly, would compete in half pipe competitions on his racing setup. Since Sean's coaches only knew freestyle, he had to teach himself. The following season, at the age of 17, Sean was recommended to be one of the coaches for Team Mountain High. Having a car and a job as the race coach, he was able to make it up to his local mountain 3-5 times a week. He also got his certification from the United States Snowboard Association (USSA) as a certified professional snowboard coach. This became the turning point of his profession as he realized he wanted to make a career out of his passion. He began to train relentlessly and focused his attention over to Alpine snowboarding. For Sean's senior year in high school, he moved to Whistler, British Columbia, Canada to train with the B.C. Development Center. The B.C. Development Center was an elite training ground with former alpine snowboard Olympian, Darren Chalmers and former head coach of the Canadian National Alpine Snowboard Team, Steve Legge as the head coaches. Sean was able to continue school through a distance learning program provided by his school back in California and was also able to maintain straight A's during his training. Sean still strives to push his riding to a whole new level and follow his dreams to the Olympics, even after suffering from a broken back from a result of a bad race training accident early in the 02/03 season. Recently purchasing a condo in Steamboat Springs, Colorado, Sean plans to live in Steamboat and train with the Steamboat Springs Winter Sports Club as well as spend some time up in Whistler with the BCDC. He is now concentrating his efforts on continuing to train with some of the most prestigious coaches and trainers in the world and moving up onto the National Team.
